The moment at 49:21 where the arpeggiated, ascending synth line intensifies, and you say, "It's reaching out... for more!", I suddenly felt like I just hit the climax of some slick documentary, with the narrator revealing how all the presented pieces fit together to produce some outrageous, improbable, historical outcome.

I would probably have bought Kunitsugami now if the game weren't on GP. Why should I pay $50 or so just because I don't use PC or XBOX? Talk about devaluing your game.

If you're wondering about the eggs at the end of every Adventure Island 2 level, which one you pick determines the next level you go to. Each level has a set of eggs with a set order that determines which level you play next. There's 8 levels to each island and the only ones you're guaranteed to play are the first and last, so depending on the eggs you choose you can play every single one or just skip through after playing a couple. The boss also runs away from the level it's in if you get to it and don't beat it, which means you then have to beat the final level of the island again, choose an egg, and hope it takes you to the right level to get to the boss again. Or just game over and continue from the start and deliberately game the eggs you pick to reach the end faster. There's a surprising amount going on with what otherwise seems like a kind of unnecessary endlevel minigame.

Hi Jeff! I've beaten Time Lord on original hardware. It's just as insane if not moreso for the rest of the levels. I'd like to give a bit of a rundown here! The time/date at the bottom is indeed a global time limit - once it hits Jan 1, 3000, instant game over. You'll probably be dead from enemies long before that happens. The orbs are also *mostly* consistent, but each level has at least one where it alternates between two positions. Most levels have one or two extra lives out in the open but there's more hidden in completely obscure ways that you'd NEVER find out if someone didn't tell you. - Castle Harman: you saw most of it, except for having to jumpkick an invisible hitbox to reach that castle in the background for an orb. The red dragons drop an orb, by the way. - Level 3: Old West, featuring wolves that constantly hunt you down, a shotgun that is worse than the pistol you get prior, even more orb weirdness and more jumpkicking invisible things. Horseshoes flying out of a stable, which you'd think would be a hazard, can actually give you an extra life if you punch enough. The boss is an insane caricature and the fight can go on forever if you let it. (It perpetually heals itself, you have to outpace it.) - Level 4: Pirate Ship! You can collect fish dropped by birds for an extra life. Featuring pirates that look like Danny Trejo, "gotcha" traps beneath health items, a nearly impossible to grab orb and a clam several times larger than the player as the boss. - Level 5: WW2 trenches. Featuring nearly instakill bullets from enemies and/or tanks, rooms with gas that have limited (!!!) gasmasks, and a boss that looks almost bootleg in quality. - Level 6: Back at the MB Time Travel station, except with WAY more enemies that hit far harder. Despite getting missile launcher and a laser gun, it's far safer to tank damage standing inside the final boss' hitbox while punching it to death, as you're invincible while attacking. You can still die and game over within seconds, though that goes for the whole game. One of the hardest/most insane games I've played on the system, along with Snake Rattle 'n' Roll. Rareware, lol. For some reason, there's a SSN carved into the side of my cart. Maybe the previous owner of the game? Who knows. It's a wild game that I despise playing, but find it fascinating to talk about!

Kid Kool makes me think we owe Sonic the Hedgehog 1 an apology. So many fuckers tried to make a platformer to rival Mario for like six years, and they’re all terrible. Then Sonic isn’t perfect, but damn, it has momentum, it has every, it’s better than this broken mess.

I am a hardcore PC gamer and you 100 percent described how i interact with most sports games now. I dont want to pay for a console, I'd rather sink that money into a PC, so i ust subscribe to Xbox Cloud and play NHL/Madden/Fifa/The Show whenever one comes out . The service actually works really well for that purpose. Hoping that NCAA Football hits cloud soon, i desperately want to play it.

We're gonna have some strongly worded things to say to the science when we get to Legacy of the Wizard, 'cause I unironically loved that game as a kid. One of my first real forays into the open-world, kinda Metroid-y genre. As someone who deeply enjoyed making her own game maps, it gave me a lot of fun times. The bosses can go straight to hell though. But the exploration? Yeah that was good shit. Adventure Island 2's a heck of an improvement over the original. I don't think 3 did as much, and I don't think 4 ever got a translation, right? 2's probably right in that sweet spot of 'fixed a lot of shit from the original' and 'the rest of the games are just more of this.' So I'd bet it remains the highest-ranked Adventure Island title.

You give plenty of justified recognition to early British PC games' experiments with various types of action RPGs, but Japan was exploring that area just as much on Japanese PCs. Companies like Falcom were out there making some insanely ambitious games for the PC-88. I wouldn't be surprised if by some metrics Sorcerian in 1988 was one of the highest-budget video game productions to date... Too bad it wasn't very good then, huh? (amazing two-hour-long soundtrack partially composed by Yuzo Koshiro though)

The main character in Time Lord looks like he came out of Nightmare on Elmstreet.. the NES game that was made by Rare. I feel like the quality of Rare's games from the NES era really depended on the publisher. A publisher would contract Rare to make a game within X number of months, and you can tell that some publishers just didn't have the Q&A testing at their disposal like other publishers did. Rare under Nintendo was a different beast, as Nintendo had the Treehouse group constantly playtesting everything Rare made, and they would delay games if they didn't like what they saw.

I owned and played the hell out of Bart vs. the World as a kid, and you're correct. It's _significantly_ better than Bart vs. the Space Mutants, but it's still (still!) not a good game. Even as I 100%ed it multiple times, I was still disappointed that it used the same busted engine.

How is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde above Silver Surfer? Or how is it above so many games? Isn't that supposed to be one of the worst games on the nes? I've missed the episode. Have to watch now.

The only thing going for some of these Rare developed games is the music by David Wise.

Many a weekend did Time Lord terrorize me as I rented it over and over. I couldn't let it best me. But it did. Until today. Hearing a second person hate this game so profoundly was very cathartic.

This is good practice because ranking 8-bit Nintendo games should show up in the 2028 Olympic games. It would've been this year but the science wasn't there yet.
